Reasons Adults Fear Going Back to School — and How to Get Over Them
Taking classes can help you get a step closer to that promotion you have been longing for, or lay your foundation for a total career change. However, many adults find it challenging to commit to schooling. The back-to-school butterflies are real regardless of the age. Learning new skills entails rearranging your schedule, combating the nerves you get while planning to get out of your comfort zone, and planning for extra expenses. Once you manage to overcome the barriers, your potential will soar high.
I’m too occupied, now is not the right time
We get it; balancing family, a day job and school can be challenging. However, you will not transform your life by only imagining how you want your future to be like. You need to get out of your comfort zone and work towards achieving your goals. Going back to college does not have to be a full-time commitment. You can take online classes, part-time classes or weekly courses. If you keep waiting for the right time, it will never come.
I feel intimidated
Getting out of your comfort zone is going to be uncomfortable, but that is normal, and you will not be the first one to go through such a transition. You are likely to feel vulnerable during your first class, but with time you will get used to the school idea and will start doing well. Don’t be worked up over the things you don’t know; instead, be confident in the rich experience you have.
Education is too expensive, I can’t afford it
Cost is a valid obstacle to education. With bills to pay and a family that depends on you, joining school might not seem ideal. However, as long as advancing your career is a top priority, you can opt for low-cost tutorials and workshops. You can also cut down on costs such as carrying lunch or taking the bus instead of Uber rides.
